Buying and selling safely
For buyers
- See the car in person, in daylight, before paying anything.
- Never send a deposit by wire transfer, crypto or gift cards. Scammers often claim to be out of the country or in the military.
- Check the VIN with a vehicle history report and make sure there's no lien on the car.
- Ask for proof of battery health: a screenshot from the car's app or a scan report.
- Pay with a bank draft at the seller's bank, or an Interac e-Transfer once you have the keys and ownership.
For sellers
- Be wary of buyers who offer more than your asking price or want to send a cheque for extra.
- Don't hand over keys or ownership until payment has fully cleared.
- Meet in a public place, ideally during the day, and bring someone with you.
- Never share codes sent to your phone. That's a common account takeover trick.
